This Week's Group Training schedule (updated 04/13/05)
Group Swims Group swims usually take place in Lake Pontchartrain from the Causeway end of the lake front. The course is approximately 1/2 mile from the seawall to the abandoned life guard shack and back. Swims typically will be announced in the summer months. Due to high fecal counts in the lake immediately after rain storms, swims are generally discouraged 4-5 days after a rain fall. The Save our Lake foundation posts fecal counts and can be found on their website at http://www.saveourlake.org/water_quality.html . Swim Clinics and Sessions Caroline Smith Triathlon Swim Training Traditional Weekly Rides Top Tuesday and Thursday - During daylight savings time (April to October) a 28 mile loop starts at the St Benedict Church on Smith Rd at 5:30 PM. This ride is a faster training ride that usually ends up with an "A" group (22-25mph) and "B" group (18 to 22mph). Friday - During summer a ride leaves Franco's Athletic Club on Hwy 22 at 6:30 AM. This ride is a 21 mile ride with fast sections and some soft pedaling. Great way to squeeze in an one hour (+) ride before work. Saturday - Rides start from the Caboose on the Tammany Trace (or alternatively Abita Springs starting 30 minutes later) and head north. The start time varies with the sun rise, check the e-mail forum. These rides normally have a variety of distances and paces. The Saturday ride offers something for the beginner to the hammers. The long course triathletes use this for the weekly long ride. This is a great chance to get a "brick" in with a post-ride run on the Tammany Trace usually with company. This ride usually starts with a large group (~30 bikes in warm weather) and eventually breaks up into pace groups and riders going different distances. We try to make the route have convenient turn-back points for the shorter distance riders. Sunday - Sometimes there is a morning ride, but more likely there is a "Root Beer" ride (especially in the colder months) at 2:00 PM from the Abita Brew Pub in Abita Springs. A convenient ride in the winter months taking advantage of warmer temperatures that finishes at the Abita Brew Pub so a mug (or more) of "Root Beer" can be enjoyed. Watch the e-mail Forum. Bob Hodges has started "the morning Sunday rides" to bring those getting started or looking for an 10-20 mph pace out to ride followed by a meal at a local establishment. Watch for Bob's posts on the e-mail forum. Holidays - Most holidays mean a day off of work and normally a morning ride will be announced starting from the Caboose on the Tammany Trace, followed by some form of celebration. Watch the e-mail Forum. Cycling Tips Top Please review this information if you are riding with Team Earthquake:
Group Runs Top Group runs are a lot less formal than group rides, but most weeks, there will be many options available in terms of days, distances and speeds. Runs are organized mostly by word of mouth, so don't be shy to ask someone or put an email out to the team if you would like to organize or participate in a group run. |
